Is Linkbait Bad or Good?

If you have a blog, linkbaiting may have become a rule of thumb when writing content. Some say it’s a good thing, some say it’s a bad thing. If you’re a blogger, are you using linkbait properly, if at all?.

What is Linkbait?

Linkbait or linkbaiting is all about writing blog posts that will stir people into action and spur a discussion. As the term implies, an article with a linkbait compels people to link back to your blog or website. Because people love communicating through the internet, they won’t be satisfied with just commenting on your posts. They tell people about it by linking to you on their twitter pages, facebook walls, etc. A linkbait is an article or a comment that attracts traffic to your blog.

Is Linkbait Always a Good Thing?

Whether or not linkbait is good depends on how you use it. Relevant linkbaits are those that your readers can relate to, like a controversial article on sex education if you have a parenting blog. But if you have a parenting blog and then you suddenly talk about the latest showbiz gossip that doesn’t interest your readers, your linkbait isn’t very effective. But some people will argue that linkbait, no matter what kind of reaction it incites, is good.

How to Write a Linkbait

There are article types that make people link back. How-to guides with high value content can wow people. New and controversial takes on popular topics are also interesting. Insider tell-alls or “exposure” articles are always effective as linkbaits, but they can have legal repercussions.

If you’re the daring type, you can write inflammatory pieces to grab the attention of thousands, if not millions, of internet goers. Just look at the way tabloids sell their stories.

A rule I learned long ago as a blogger is this… always be accountable for anything you write about online.

How to Use Links to Receive Link Backs

Have you ever heard of the phrase “link love”? Sometimes, it’s the best form of linkbait around. Linking to someone else’s article instantly alerts the other blogger. In addition, there are some blogging platforms that automatically place the link to your “reaction” post under the article you linked to.

You’re communicating with people through your website or blog. There will be people who will like your blog, there will be people who will hate it, and there are those who are indifferent to things you write. For a blog to be popular, you must command the attention of all these people. Being a blogger, you should always write posts that other people can proudly share on other sites. Imagine yourself talking to your audience when writing linkbaits.
